Introduction

This guide covers installing Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 10.1.3.3.3 on Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition.

The installation covered in this article is a basic install, using the OC4J approach rather than the more advanced approach of integrating with Oracle Application Server. The installation uses all the default options to provide a very simple install, useful for a home research environment.

The installation was undertaken in a VMWare Server 2 virtual machine running on a twin CPU AMD Opteron based server. The virtual machine was installed with Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition. The Windows installation was a default one except for the following changes:

  • Install Firefox - my preferred browser
  • Install Firefox Adobe Flash Player plugin [Not needed for the installation itself, but OBIEE requires it]
  • Install JDK - Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE). Latest available from Sun [here]

Installation Process

The following screenshots show the process of running the Oracle Installation software to install and configure OBIEE.

Start by running the installer by double clicking the file setup.exe. This will bring up the first installation screen:

OBIEE Start Setup

Assuming you have the necessary disk space and TEMP space, clicking Next will then bring up this screen:

OBIEE Choose Install Locations

This article is for an entirely default installation, so we'll accept the Installation and Data directories and click Next to continue.

OBIEE Choose Setup Type

I'll install the complete product, rather than a subset, so I choose "Complete" and click Next to continue.

Now, according to the documentation, if Microsoft IIS is installed, it should show a dialog box asking you which Application Server you wish to use - OC4J or Microsoft IIS.

On Windows 2003 Server (Standard) x64 with IIS 6 installed this works and the dialog box looks like that below. On Windows 2008 Server (Standard) x64, with IIS 7 installed, this does not appear to work, i.e. the dialog box is skipped and it moves on to the next dialog box (JDK Location).

OBIEE Application Server Selection

I haven't worked out why this is yet - maybe it's because IIS 7 isn't recognised by the installer, or maybe it's not supported. Either way, the OBIEE installer appears to not recognise the fact that an IIS installation is available. Either way, that means, on Windows 2008 Server (Standard) x64, I continue the installation down the OC4J route.

OBIEE Set JDK Location and Admin Passwords

Now, we set the Home for the JDK - the location shown was for a default installation of the JDK.

OBIEE Set BI Services Top

This is a simple "home server" installation, so I leave things to run via the LocalSystem account and leave the service startup settings to the defaults.

OBIEE Set BI Services Bottom

No we set the Error Message Language to English and click Next.

The installer now shows a summary page:

OBIEE Setup Summary Page

Clicking next starts the process of installing the files.

OBIEE Setup Installing Files

Once all the files are installed, this screen appears. Just click Next to continue.

OBIEE Install Files Completed

The installation summary page then displays.

OBIEE Installation Summary

Click next and the installer then alerts you to the need for a reboot. Select Yes and click Finish to start the reboot.

OBIEE Reboot Computer Request

Once the reboot has completed, the desktop will now look similar to this:

OBIEE Desktop After Reboot

...a number of new services will appear:

OBIEE Services After Reboot

...and a new program group is available on the Start menu:
