Install Openfiler 2.3 VM for x86 64 on VMWare Server 2 on Windows 2008 Server (Standard)
From Oramosswiki
This guide shows how to get the prebuilt OpenFiler 2.3 VMWare virtual machine installed and running on Windows 2008 Server (Standard Edition).
Assumptions
- You have Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition (64 bit) installed and operational.
- You have VMWare Server 2.0 installed and operational.
- You are running on a x86_64 64 bit architecture.
- You have downloaded the prebuilt [OpenFiler 2.3] virtual machine. For this article, and given my test machine is an x86_64 server, I downloaded the x86_64 VM, which comes as a tar.gz file. Unzip the gz file to extract the tar, then extract the two files from the tar file and put them together in an appropriate directory...for the purpose of this article I have a location for all my VMware virtual machine files and I created a directory below that called "F:\Virtual Machines\OpenFiler" as per the diagram below.
Instructions
1. Start the "VMWare Server Home Page" by clicking on the shortcut or quicklink. This opens a browser window using your default web browser. Depending on your browser and version you may get security issues ...in IE7 I simply ignore the error and continue to the site, whereas with Firefox 3 I needed to create an exception. The screen should look something like this:
2. Enter your credentials and click "Log In". To logon you use an administrator logon for Windows 2008 Server. If your credentials are accepted you'll see something similar to this screen:
3. Now lets add the OpenFiler Virtual Machine into VMWare Server. Click on the "Virtual Machines" tab. I have one VM here already for Fedora as you can see in the image below. Click on the "Add Virtual Machine to Inventory" link on the right hand side to begin the wizard for adding the VM.
4. Choose the "standard" data store from the left hand pane. If your VM's are stored in a different data store then you'll need to use that one of course. Then choose the "OpenFiler" folder. Highlight the VMX file in the centre panel - that's the VM we're going to add. Click on OK to add the VM.
5. The VM is added and you return to the Virtual Machines tab which now looks like this:
6. Select the "Openfiler NAS/SAN Appliance" VM on the Inventory tree:
7. The VM itself doesn't have any storage for serving volumes - just the OS itself - so lets add a disk to it of a nominal size, a default sized 8GB one. Click on "Add Hardware" on the Commands panel to bring up the Add Hardware wizard. Select "Hard Disk" and click next:
8. Select "Create a New Virtual Disk" and click next:
9. Default hard disk size is 8GB. Click "Browse" to name and find a location for the datafile. Click on "standard" data store on the left hand pane, then the "openfiler" folder. Type in the name of the datafile in the "save as" area at the top of the dialog box:
10. Click OK to accept the file name and location. You can play with some settings like allocating all the space immediately - but we can accept the defaults for this simple case. Click Next
11. Click Finish to complete the wizard.
12. Select the "Openfiler NAS/SAN Appliance" VM on the Inventory tree. Now we see the extra 8GB disk:
13. Now select the Console tab:
14. Click the big play button. The VM starts:
15. As per the instructions on the black screen, click anywhere so that it brings up the console window for the VM:
16. The Web administration GUI URL of the OpenFiler VM is shown in the window - in this case https://192.168.1.81:446 - Bring this up in a browser:
17. Log in to OpenFiler using the username "openfiler", password "password":
